China’s Quest for Naval Hegemony: The World’s Largest Radar System and its Impact on Naval Power

China has set out to build the largest naval radar in history, to achieve hegemony in the South China Sea. Chinese scientists said that the new radar will change the balance of naval power in the world’s oceans.

This comes at a time when US reports revealed Beijing’s superiority in the number of naval vessels, becoming the largest naval power.

Beijing is seeking to develop better radars for its warships, due to the increasing US military activities in Asia.

Chinese scientists have revealed the start of building a radar system that can change the balance of naval power in the world’s oceans, with its ability to detect incoming missile penetrations from thousands of kilometers away.

The new radar will be able to detect any ballistic missile from a distance of up to 4,500 km, and it can also track multiple targets within a range of 3,500 km.

According to a research paper, the modern radar incoming consists of tens of thousands of transmitters and receivers, which enhances its search and tracking capabilities, and is much larger in size than the usual devices.

And each unit can send and receive signals as an independent radar when working together, which provides the ability for these units to generate electromagnetic signals with a strength of 30 megawatts, enough to monitor any warship in its range.

The radars on most military ships have a working range of a few hundred kilometres, and they are limited by the sheer power required to extend their capabilities.

However, the Chinese military believes that the greater the power of the naval radar, the greater the ability to confront US forces in the South China Sea, and to detect threats posed by enemy ships and aircraft at an early stage.

Successive US administrations consider the Red Dragon the biggest strategic competitor, especially since Beijing is pursuing a policy of military construction, step by step, and is trying to become the dominant power in the South China Sea.
