Netflix might force its customers to switch to a more expensive offer.
In Canada, Netflix suddenly removed the “Essential” offer last weekend, billed here at €8.99/month. New customers were invited to subscribe to the new plan with , at $5.99 per month, or to upgrade to the Standard plan, at $16.49/month.
Of course, it did not take long for the first criticisms to be heard on social networks, Internet users being outraged at being forced to pay more to access the service or having to submit to opting for a formula with . Just hours following removing the “Essential” option, Netflix quickly added it back to its site.
Considered the service’s most popular formula, the “Essential” formula provides access to the entire catalog in HD, on a single device at a time.
As we know, Netflix likes to test new formulas and features in certain territories. Canada is one of the platform’s preferred test markets. As we also know, the streaming giant is currently trying to push its “Essential with ” formula and boost its revenues. Abandoning an “Essential” formula might enable it to make its investments more profitable. Should we see this as a harbinger of the disappearance of the “Essential” formula? For now, nothing is less certain. One thing, however, seems guaranteed: the question is currently on the table at the streaming giant.
