Algeria .. The story of “Arouj” and “Zafira” in the movie “The Last Queen” raises a debate regarding the Ottoman era

The Algerian Ministry of Culture canceled a previous decision to ban the Algerian film “The Last Queen”, which tells the story of “Zafira”, the wife of King Selim Toumi, who came to power in the early sixteenth century and decided to seek the help of the Ottoman commander, Oruj Barbarossa, to repel the attacks of the Spaniards.

But the recent showing of the film in local cinemas opened a debate regarding the Ottoman era and renewed the discussion regarding the line between fantasy and historical realism in cinema.

The film was co-prepared and written by Algerian-French director Damien Honore, and Algerian actress Adila Ben Demrad, who also played the role of Zefira.
