Italian police have identified a young Swiss woman who is said to have carved the first letter of her name into a wall in the Coliseum in Rome on Friday. The investigation began following an Italian tour guide used his smartphone to film the woman carving an “N”.

The tour guide accompanying a group touring the Colosseum was alerted to the crime by a tourist. He reported the case to Colosseum security personnel. The Swiss tourist now faces a fine of up to 15,000 euros for defacing and damaging cultural assets.

A similar incident happened just a few weeks ago, which caused outrage among Culture Minister Gennaro Sangennaro. A young tourist of Bulgarian origin residing in England had carved his name and that of his girlfriend on a wall of the Coliseum. A video that appeared on the Internet had triggered a wave of outrage. The Bulgarian, who has since been reported, apologized, but that didn’t save him a hefty fine.
