Many heat records have been broken in France, affected by a heat wave, mainly in altitude reference stations in the Alps, the Pyrenees and Corsica, Météo-France announced on Tuesday.
The thermometer exceeded 40°C for the first time in Verdun in Ariège (40.6°C at 550m altitude) and in Serralongue in the Pyrénées-Orientales (40.4°C at 700m), according to provisional values recorded at 5:00 p.m.

Temperatures also broke records in other resorts, including: Alpe d’Huez (1,860m) with 29.5°C, Renno in Corsica (755m) with 38.3°C, Avrieux in Savoie ( 1,104m) with 36°C, Aups in the Var (497m) with 38.6°C, Vauvenargues in the Bouches-du-Rhône (565m) with 37.3°C.
In all these municipalities, these records are 8 to 11.9°C above normal for the season.
At Alpe d’Huez, a high mountain resort, the record was also broken for the minimum temperature: the thermometer did not drop below 19.7°C overnight, clearly beating the previous record set at 18.7°C on July 23, 2009 and approaching the definition of a tropical night (20°C).
The 40°C mark was also crossed, but not for the first time, in several cities, with 40.7°C recorded in Pila-Canale (Corsica) and Luc (Var) while a new record was reached at 40.6°C in Tiranges (Haute-Loire).

The records at Serralongue and Verdun in Ariège were fueled by a foehn effect, the sudden heating of an air mass following crossing a mountain range, said Météo-France.
The south-east of France is also affected by a heat wave which crosses the west of the Mediterranean basin, particularly affected by the effects of global warming, which also hits Spain, Greece and Italy hard.
