Success and improvisation
In front of the Beaubien cinema – the organizer behind this event, which has been jealously kept secret for several weeks -, the community piano had been moved to face Molson Park.
Patrick Watson wanted the few hundred spectators sitting in the grass – and even climbing the trees – in Molson Park to be able to see him and above all, hear him sing.
It’s safe to say that the corner of Iberville and Beaubien streets has never been so quiet as tonight, when the Montreal artist delivered – piano-voice version – some of his finest songs, including The Great Escape, I will leave you notes et Big Bird in a Small Cage.
Recognized for his eccentricity and his sense of creativity, Patrick Watson has not failed to sprinkle his repertoire with original effects and improvised segments. He even asked people in the audience to throw invented song titles at him, then managed to turn them into an imagined melody live, to amazed eyes.
The singer also involved his guitarist friend Mishka, who was in the crowd, in this relaxed show, the time of a few shared songs.

“Montreal, I love you”
This very sweet moment was interspersed with funny comments “à la Patrick Watson” launched voluntarily in “franglais” by the proud Montrealer.
“Only real Montrealers can understand what I’m saying,” he joked, explaining that his French was “not terrible.”
The 43-year-old singer with the eternal air of a kid offered his superb piece Here Comes The River as a closing gift, bringing tears to many cheeks and almost stopping time.
The crowd estimated at 400 people was made up of people of all ages, who emerged unanimously won over by the magic of an evening spent in the company of Patrick Watson.
“Montreal, I love you! There are no better places I might call home.
