Identifying Risk Factors for Early-Onset Colon Cancer in Young Adults: Findings and Recommendations

“We know that colon cancer in young people is on the rise, although the absolute risk is still much lower than that of 45 to 54 year olds,” says Dr. Thomas Imperiale of Indiana University. “Nevertheless, this does not mean that we should not try to identify young people at high risk to screen them”.

To identify possible risk factors in men too young to be involved in screening programs, the researchers recruited 3,000 participants aged 35 to 49: 600 had non-hereditary colorectal cancer and 2,400 acted as control patients.

All of them underwent various tests, informed regarding their lifestyle, their medical history…

What risk factors?

Via a mathematical model, the scientists were able to isolate seven elements (sometimes surprising) favoring the early onset of cancer. To know :

Regular alcohol consumption; Being between 35 and 49 years old; Suffering from obesity; Having a first or second degree relative with colorectal cancer; Having a low socio-economic level; Not using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Ibuprofen, etc.). Indeed, research has already shown that the risk of colorectal cancer is lower in people who take NSAIDs; Do not use statins regularly. The results of a recent study showed that people who regularly take these “bad” cholesterol drugs had a significantly lower risk of developing colorectal cancer.

“Discussing with their young patients who are exposed to these risk factors, some physicians might consider a non-invasive screening test,” explain the authors. Which began an identical study in women who, it should be remembered, are half as affected by this form of tumor as men.
