The downside of the whiskey boom
Scottish whiskey is becoming increasingly popular. More bottles have never been exported. But the boom causes problems. A sober exploration on the island of Islay.
Adam Hannett is standing outside in the sun on this Thursday morning and is looking out to sea in a bit of amazement. Really now, no cloud again? It’s mid-June, it hasn’t rained much for eight weeks, and if it continues like this, he’ll have a problem. Hannett looks up at the bright blue sky, then he narrows his eyes and says: “If it stays this warm and dry for much longer, we will have to stop production.” And that in Scotland of all places, where it supposedly rains so much.
