Soufiane El-Bakali Dominates the 3000-Meter Steeplechase at World Championships in Hungary

Within the World Championships in Athletics, which is currently being held in Hungary, Moroccan Soufiane El-Bakali won the gold medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase race.

Moroccan Soufiane El-Bakali won the second gold medal in a row in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race at the World Athletics Championships, winning the title in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, on Tuesday. Al-Bakali finished the race with a time of 8:03.53 minutes in front of the Ethiopian Lamesha Girma (8:05.44 d), who won the silver, and the Kenyan Abraham Kibot III (8:11.98 d).

This is the second consecutive world title for El-Baqali, following the World Athletics Championships that were held in the American city of Eugene last year. The 27-year-old Moroccan runner, who was born in the city of Fez, also won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the summer of 2021.

Al-Baqali told AFP following his victory: “I am very happy to win the second gold in a row. I came here to win the gold and nothing else.”

Al-Baqali added, “I had a tough competition from the world record holder (Germa), but I was able to impose my control in the last lap. It was not easy, but I managed to win.”
