Football clubs have never spent so much on recruiting as in 2023. This is revealed by the Football Observatory (CIES), which has analyzed the financial flows linked to transfers around the world over the past decade.

Globally, clubs are spending more and more to attract new players. This, in a nutshell, is the conclusion to be drawn from the latest monthly report published by the Football Observatory.

While we are only at the beginning of September, the year 2023 is already historic. Never more than 10 billion euros in transfer fees had been spent in a year on a global scale. Since last January? 12.4 billion, i.e. 24% more than in 2019, the year of the previous record. At the time, just before the coronavirus pandemic, clubs had invested 9.98 billion euros to recruit.
