Villarrica is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile which rises above the lake (In limnology, a lake is a large body of water located in a continent where itโฆ) Villarrica and the city (A town is an urban unit (a โhuman settlementโ forโฆ) of Pucรณn, approximately 25 km from the locality of Villarrica.
Geography
Villarrica is one of the three largest stratovolcanoes in the Andean chain. About 25 cones stand out on the sides of Villarrica. This stratovolcano covers an area of โโ100 km2 for a volume (The volume, in physical or mathematical sciences, is a quantity which measures the extensionโฆ) of 40 km3.
Guided hikes are available from Pucรณn, but may be suspended during periods of increased volcanic or seismic activity. In 2007 a guided helicopter service began offering flights over the crater (For the crater of volcanic origin, see Volcanic crater For the original craterโฆ).
In winter (Winter is one of the four seasons of temperate zones.) skiing is practiced on the western slopes (West is a cardinal point, opposite to the east. This is the direction towardsโฆ ) of Villarrica.
In Pucรณn, one of Chileโs main tourist cities, residents go regarding their daily lives. The city is located between a mountain range covered with araucarias, the endemic trees of Araucania, and the large Villarrica lake. However, the Villarrica volcano, 2,847 m high, perpetually threatens the city. This basaltic cone with an open crater is a violent volcano. Its last โbigโ eruption, in 1971, opened a 4 km wide fissure from which 30 million cubic meters of lava gushed (Lava is a molten rock, more or less fluid, emitted by a volcano during aโฆ). The largest flow was 14 km long and 200 m wide. Several rivers were diverted. The glaciers melted and transformed into deadly torrents of mud. Every day (The day or the day is the interval which separates sunrise from sunset; it is theโฆ), the Villarrica spews smoke, ashes and lava. Like all highly active volcanoes, Villarrica is under constant surveillance.
