New residential and commercial buildings will have to do without natural gas, whether for heating or stoves, starting next fall.

The Press revealed, Tuesday evening, that the City will prohibit the installation of new gas installations in buildings of three floors or less and 600 square meters or less from October 1, before extending the measure to larger buildings from April 1, 2025.

The City confirmed the information reported by the daily and specified that further details will be revealed Wednesday morning at 7 a.m.

It should be noted that the measure excludes industrial buildings and the catering sector, which may continue to use gas stoves.

Buildings with more than three floors will also be able to use natural gas, provided that it is of renewable origin.

The City explained that it had no choice in leaving this door open for the moment due to the lack of capacity of Hydro-Québec, which might struggle to adequately supply all its customers during winter peak periods.
