The Faculty of Medicine will offer the Specialty in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, whose proposal was presented for approval to the University Board of Directors.

Dr. Ismael Francisco Herrera Benavente, director of the Faculty, explained that the specialty in paidopschiatry cannot be postponed, given the data from the WHO (World Health Organization) where it states that seven out of ten people who have mental problems are generated in the first 18 years of his life.

The Mental Health and Addictions Coordination of Health Services in San Luis Potosí estimates that more than 72 thousand adolescents suffer from some mental disorder, more than ten thousand adolescents have had ideas or have undertaken suicidal actions linked to alcohol consumption and more than 20 thousand associated with the consumption of other substances.

In the 2019 internal statistics of the psychiatric clinic “Dr. Everardo Neumann”, 6,508 services were granted to children and adolescents for diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder, depression, autism spectrum and intellectual disability.

“If we contribute to the training of specialists in these age groups, I think we are going to greatly strengthen the national health system, which at that stage is very deficient. Therefore, we would be the third university that offers this specialty, behind the UNAM and the UANL,” explained the director of the Faculty of Medicine.
