Berlin – Migration researcher Gerald Knaus sees asylum procedures outside Europe as a possible important component in limiting irregular migration. A European pilot project is now needed, Knaus told the dpa. “The EU Commission might suggest: Italy can send everyone who comes across the central Mediterranean in the next two years to a safe third country.” The key to this is negotiations with a country in Africa that is interested in cooperation.
