The new general delegate for children’s rights (DGDE), Solayman Laqdim, was our guest on La Première, this Monday, during the morning show to present his observations. According to him, the situation of children’s rights in Belgium is worrying, emphasizing that “the question of precariousness is significant, we have more and more unaccompanied minors whose rights are violated, both in the legal circuit and when they are wandering. One in four children in Brussels lives below the poverty line, and the housing issue is also very worrying, with families on the street accompanied by children. The situation is quite catastrophic.”

The delegate insists that the youth aid sector is in great pain, declaring: “aToday, 4,600 children in serious difficulties are on the waiting list. Not only are their numbers increasing, but the quality of public response is decreasing day by day.

For Solayman Laqdim, the solution lies in establishing a “master plan and massive refinancing of the sector.

The new general delegate also highlights the problem of defining what “a young“, specifying the absence of a clear definition.”If we take the youth welfare sector, it is up to 18 years old, in some cases 22 years old. If we take the mental health sector, it’s 23 years. If we take the youth sector, it’s 26 years, or even beyond. We cannot agree on the definition of what a young person is in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Furthermore, the situation of young homeless people, who number more than 1,200, is considered dramatic by the general delegate, emphasizing that“following leaving the youth welfare sector, which takes care of them until the age of 18, more than 25% of them become homeless two years following their release“.
