Employees of the Quebec administration are less well off than other employees in the province, reveals a report from the Institute of Statistics of Quebec, published Thursday. This year, their salaries are regarding 17% behind the latter.

To arrive at this observation, the institute compares each year the remuneration of employees of the Quebec administration – which includes the public service, the education sector and that of health and social services – to that of other Quebec employees who work in companies with more than 200 employees – in the private sector and in other public sectors such as universities or municipalities.

It appears that salaries in the Quebec administration are, on average, approximately 17% lower than those of other Quebec employees.

Even when we look at total compensation, that is, we take into account benefits and leave, it remains 7% lower.

It is between public administration and other public sectors that the gap is most pronounced. Those in the first group are 22% behind in salaries and 23% in overall compensation, compared to those in the second group.

The gap between public administration and the private sector is a little less marked. Salaries in the Quebec administration are approximately 14% lower than in private companies. But overall remuneration is equivalent between the two sectors.
