This year, 82 local cases of this viral disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, have been reported in Italy, 43 in France and three in Spain. One person died from the infection. More than 80% of all contaminations were observed in North and South America.
Globally, the number of dengue cases has increased tenfold in 20 years, from 500,000 to more than 5 million. Some 5,000 people will die from the consequences of the disease in 2023.
For the moment, small populations of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) and Aedes aegypti, a mosquito which also transmits dengue fever but also yellow fever in particular, are established in Southern Europe. Their eggs survive the winter and the larvae hatch when the weather warms.
For most affected people, the infection is mild. However, in 10% of cases, serious complications arise.
