“Majorly involved” – US toughens tone towards Iran over Houthi attacks
As of: 08:38 a.m. | Reading time: 4 minutes
“Necessary to intervene militarily – the rebels don’t understand another language”
The German government is considering participating in a US-led military coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea from attacks by the Yemeni Houthi militia. The Union is calling for more speed. “We expect the federal government to finally complete this review,” says parliamentary group deputy Johann Wadephul on WELT TV.
According to US intelligence released by the White House, Tehran has provided the Houthis with drones and missiles as well as tactical intelligence, without which the attacks would hardly be possible. More in the live ticker.
The US has tightened its tone towards Iran in view of the Yemeni Houthis’ attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. “We know that Iran was instrumental in planning operations once morest merchant ships in the Red Sea,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on Friday. Washington has “no reason to believe that Iran is trying to dissuade the Houthis from this reckless behavior.”
Tehran has provided the Houthis with drones and missiles as well as tactical intelligence, according to US intelligence released by the White House. Visual analysis showed a nearly identical match between Iranian drones and missiles launched by the Houthis, the White House said. In addition, the Houthis are dependent on the maritime surveillance systems provided by Iran.

In addition, tactical intelligence provided by Iran was “crucial” to the Houthi attacks on merchant ships that began in November, Watson said.
Since the beginning of the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, the Iran-aligned Houthis have repeatedly fired drones and rockets at Israel and most recently attacked ships in the Red Sea several times. According to the US Department of Defense, the Houthi rebels launched more than 100 attacks with drones and missiles on a total of ten merchant ships.

7:26 a.m. – Guterres remembers killed UN employees
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has paid tribute to United Nations staff killed in the Gaza war. “136 of our colleagues in Gaza were killed within 75 days,” Guterres wrote on the online platform X. Something like this has never happened in the history of the UN. “Most of our staff have been forcibly evicted from their homes,” the Secretary General wrote. He expressed his appreciation to them and to the thousands of humanitarian workers who risked their lives for civilians in the Gaza Strip.
In another post, Guterres once more criticized Israel’s actions in the conflict. “The manner in which Israel is conducting this offensive creates huge hurdles for the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza,” he wrote. In order to effectively bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, we need, among other things, employees who can work in safety.
2:15 a.m. – EU officials shocked by food shortages in Gaza
Two senior EU officials have said they are “deeply shocked” by the assessment that the entire population of the Gaza Strip is at risk of acute food shortages. “This is a serious development and should be a wake-up call for the whole world to act now to prevent a deadly human catastrophe,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and crisis management commissioner Janez Lenarcic said in a statement.
“We urgently need continuous, rapid, safe and unhindered access for humanitarian aid to prevent further deterioration of the already catastrophic situation,” said the two politicians. “Lack of access to basic foodstuffs leads to famine.”
11:25 p.m. – Biden is “heartbroken” over the death of an American in Hamas violence
US President Joe Biden said he was “heartbroken” over the news of the death of an American in Hamas violence. “We continue to pray for the well-being and safe return of his wife, Judy,” Biden said. The 73-year-old was murdered by Hamas terrorists on October 7th, the newspapers “Haaretz” and “Jerusalem Post” previously reported, citing his hometown Nir Oz. They took his body with them to the Gaza Strip. The man had previously been listed as a hostage.
According to the media, the jazz musician had both US and Israeli citizenship. His wife, also a dual national, was also abducted to the Gaza Strip on October 7th. Biden reiterated his promise to free the hostages still being held by Hamas. “We will not stop working to bring her home,” he wrote.
