Skeyes, the autonomous public company which manages Belgian airspace, was affected by a strike this Saturday early evening. “This Saturday, December 23, 2023, the management of skeyes had to notice that the staff of the control tower of its Steenokkerzeel site (located within the Brussels-National airport, editor’s note) will cease their activities. This is a wildcat staff strike. The affected personnel intend to stop work around 6:00 p.m. Activities will resume around 8:00 p.m.” said a press release from Skeyes.
Contacted by us, the spokesperson for Brussels airport clarified that no plane might land or take off from the site between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. According to her, the strike only affects the Zaventem control tower. This movement of discontent therefore has consequences for a certain number of travelers.
Around twenty flights which were due to arrive in Zaventem were disrupted. They were redirected to the airports of Lille, Liège and Frankfurt, according to our information. For departures, 13 flights were affected by the strike.
This action would be caused by the non-granting of leave to a member of staff already scheduled, according to 7sur7 which cites the direction of Skeyes.
