ROME: A Franciscan friar has been appointed as the head of the Commission on Artificial Intelligence (AI) appointed by the Italian government. Italian-born priest Paolo Benanti has been appointed by the Italian government to head its AI Commission.

The government formed the commission in the last quarter of 2023. Fifty-year-old Paolo has been serving on the UN’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee since October 2023. Paolo, an expert on topics including algorithms, is also the only Italian on the UN’s AI advisory board.

Paolo’s first task as head of the AI ​​committee is to brief Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the progress of AI in Italy.

Earlier in March 2023, he held a discussion with Pope Francis on the relationship between morality and integration of artificial intelligence in society.
