On Monday, January 29, in the High Anti-Corruption Court, Oleksandr Pedan expressed his desire to take on bail the exposé of the Ministry of Defense, Oleksandr Liev, who is suspected of embezzling money from the Armed Forces. “We met back in the Ukrainian Crimea… Oleksandr Sergeyevich Liev was the Minister of Resorts and Tourism of the Crimea. There we met and are friends as families. When the annexation of Crimea took place, Oleksandr Serhiyevich, despite our enemy’s offer to stay there, moved to Ukraine, settled in Kyiv and since then has always shown a pro-Ukrainian position,” Pedan said in court. As previously reported, on January 29, the High Anti-Corruption Court rejected the prosecutor’s request and did not choose a preventive measure for the former head of the Department of Military-Technical Policy, Development of Weapons and Military Equipment of the Ministry of Defense Oleksandr Liev. During the meeting, the prosecutors asked Lieva, one of the suspects in embezzlement of almost 1.5 billion UAH for the purchase of ammunition for the Armed Forces, to be detained or bailed in the amount of 268 million UAH.
Liev and four other people are suspected of embezzling almost 1.5 billion hryvnias for the purchase of shells for the Armed Forces. According to the SBU, in August 2022, officials of the Ministry of Defense concluded a contract for the purchase of a wholesale batch of artillery shells with the arms supplier Lviv Arsenal. Then the Ministry of Defense transferred the money to the company’s accounts, but the company did not send the artillery projectile.
