Egypt rejected statements by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, in which he hinted at its “responsibility” for the Hamas attack last October 7.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered it “unfortunate and shameful that Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich continues to make irresponsible and inflammatory statements, which only reveal a hunger for killing and destruction, and sabotage any attempt to contain the crisis in the Gaza Strip.”

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said on Monday that such statements are “completely unacceptable, as Egypt fully controls its territory and does not allow any party to insert its name into any failed attempt to justify its shortcomings.”

The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” quoted Smotrich as saying that Egypt “bears great responsibility for what happened on October 7,” in reference to Hamas’ sudden attack on Israel.

The Israeli Finance Minister said that Hamas’ ammunition supplies “largely pass through Egypt.”
