Former Verkhovna Rada deputy and dissident Stepan Khmara has passed away. He was 86 years old.
“Stepan Khmara has died,” says the politician’s Facebook page (owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned). It is noted that in recent years Khmara suffered from serious illnesses, and his family raised funds for treatment and chemotherapy. He was a well-known supporter of Ukrainian independence.
In 1980, Khmara was arrested by the KGB and sentenced to seven years in prison camps and five years in exile for his nationalist activities. However, in 1987 he returned to Ukraine and became one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, which opposed the communist regime. Despite health problems, Khmara continued to be active in public life.
