241 projects were submitted at the start of 2022, in response to two calls for projects, the first of a general nature and the second on the theme of “radio frequencies and health”. After a rigorous selection process based on the evaluations of the scientific committees, 42 projects were selected.

As part of the National Environment-Health-Work Research Program (PNR EST), managed by Anses, these projects are financed on budgets delegated by the ministries responsible for the environment, labor, health and agriculture, as well as funds from partner establishments. For the fifth year, a specific budget from the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition made it possible to support projects on endocrine disruptors. This year, ANSES having benefited from additional funds, it financed five projects on the risks associated with air pollution. This allocation comes from a decision of the Council of State following non-compliance, in different regions, with air quality levels.

Provide knowledge in Anses’ areas of expertise

These projects will provide knowledge in the different areas of expertise of ANSES and in particular on health risks for the general population and in the professional environment, as well as risks for ecosystems or the quality of environments. They involve multidisciplinary teams, including those from the field of human and social sciences.

More precisely, the projects selected for 2022 focus on one or more types of environmental and occupational exposure:

Twenty projects focus on chemical agentsof which nine projects concern endocrine disruptors; Six projects will concern emerging issuesnot yet explored or new, among them, one project studies the issue of nitrous oxide and two study micro and nano-plastics; Six projects concern the theme of radio frequencies including 4 focusing particularly on electromagnetic fields linked to the deployment of 5G; Seven are interested in professional exposures and Health at workamong them three are linked to new modes or new organization of work such as teleworking and prolonged use of screens; Finally, ten projects relate to pathogens bacteria and virusesfive of which concern environmental quality and two vector control.

Among these projects, some will provide a better understanding of the links between environmental exposures and pathologies such as cancer, respiratory diseases or even scleroderma, an autoimmune disease.

In addition, twelve projects will contribute to deepening knowledge on the exposome.

Thirty-eight projects will be funded by ANSES (€6.8 million), three will be supported by the multi-organization Cancer Thematic Institute of the Aviesan Alliance as part of the Cancer Plan (€0.56 million) and one project by ADEME (Ecological Transition Agency) (0.21 M).
