Kolkata: Protests broke out once more in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of Bengal on Friday. Incidents were reported in Bermojur and Jupkhali areas. Incidents of violence have been continuing in the area for the last 10 days following the women of Sandeshkhali raised complaints of sexual assault and land grabbing once morest Trinamool leader Shaja Khan Shaikh.

Many women took to the streets and protested with sticks and brooms, accusing the police of unjustly detaining people. The villagers set fire to the road to stop the police vehicle. A BJP women’s delegation led by MP Locket Chatterjee was intercepted by the police and taken to the Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar.

A curfew has been declared in the area following the incidents of violence. Gathering of four or more people in a public place is prohibited. West Bengal Police Director General Rajeev Kumar and South Bengal Police Additional Director General Supratim Sarkar have reached the spot to bring the situation under control.

On January 5, when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials came for inspection in a case related to the ration distribution scam, Trinamool cadres beat them up. With this, the area became tense. Following this, the women of Sandeshkhali came forward with revelations following Shaja Khan Shaikh went into hiding. Protests by locals were also violent, accusing Shah Jahan and his followers of usurping their land and mistreating women.
