Rainer Callmond, the former Bayer Leverkusen manager for many years, speculated that Xabi Alonso, the team’s current coach, would not move to Liverpool or Bayern Munich, but would lead Real Madrid one day.
Alonso, 42, has previously worn the shirts of the three clubs, while Bayern Munich and Liverpool need a new coach next summer following Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp announced their departure at the end of the current season.
Carlo Ancelotti, the current coach of Real Madrid, renewed his contract until “summer 2026”, to coincide with the end of Alonso’s contract with the German club.
Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen did not lose in 34 matches in all competitions this season, and qualified for the semi-finals of the German Cup, and plays in the round of 16 in the European League, and also tops the German League table, 10 points behind its closest competitor.
Sky channel revealed the existence of preliminary negotiations between Xabi Alonso and the Bayern Munich management. But Callmond, who held several managerial positions at Bayer Leverkusen during the period between 1976 and 2004, until he reached the position of managing director, told the Wolfsburg Allgemeine newspaper that he did not expect the Spanish coach to move to Munich or “Anfield Castle,” Liverpool’s stronghold. He added: “I do not think that Alonso will go to Munich, nor will he succeed Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool, because it is difficult to take Klopp’s place, who is considered beloved by the Reds fans, and it is almost impossible to obtain his legacy.”
He said, “I expect Alonso to stay with Bayer Leverkusen for at least a year or two, to take charge of Real Madrid, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso won the European and World Championships with the Spanish national team, and the Champions League with Real Madrid, and therefore his move to Madrid in 2026 seems like a step.” Logical.
