As many as 60 illegal migrants from Libya died in a ship accident in the Mediterranean Sea. The accident occurred when the ship was sailing from Libya to Europe, Thursday (14/3).
“Survivors reported that at least 60 people died on the journey, including women and one child,” said the Mediterranee emergency service based in Marseille, France, Friday (15/3).
The group’s Ocean Viking rescue ship is currently heading to port, carrying 224 people rescued from different boats.
One of the UN agencies, namely the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said it was very concerned by the news regarding the ship sinking in the Central Mediterranean. The aid agency said it had asked Italian authorities to evacuate all the victims.
Mediterranee emergency services have saved more than 39 thousand people in the Mediterranean since 2016.
Last year, 3,105 migrants died or were reported missing trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. Meanwhile, the death toll this year has reached 278 people.
