The Indonesian General Election COMMISSION (KPU) has determined the results of the 2024 elections on Wednesday (20/3) evening. As a result, the United Development Party (PPP) failed to qualify for Senayan because the votes it received were less than the parliamentary threshold of 4%.
This is the first time since 1971 that PPP has no representatives in the DPR RI. Senior researcher at the Political Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Lili Romli regrets this, especially since PPP is a political party that was born from the fusion of Islamic parties during the New Order era.
“This might be due to abandonment by Islamic voters who switched to choosing other parties,” said Lili to Media Indonesia, Thursday (21/3).
In the 2024 election, the Kaaba party only won 5,878,777 votes or 3.87%. PPP is one of 10 political parties participating in the 2024 elections that failed to qualify for Senayan.
Lili believes that one of the reasons voters left PPP was because of internal factors in the party. Before being led by Mardiono, PPP was hit by leadership dualism. Apart from that, PPP also does not have a central figure who is currently an icon.
Lili also highlighted the PPP coalition choice which she considered not in line with the PPP voter base. In the 2024 presidential election contest, PPP is in coalition with the PDI Perjuangan, Perindo Party and Hanura Party to support the Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud Md pair. The pair number 3 ultimately lost and received the fewest votes among the two other candidates.
The final reason why PPP was abandoned by voters, continued Lili, was because it did not connect with young voters.
“It seems that PPP is still relying on older generation voters, even though the majority of voters are millennials and generation Z,” said Lili. (Z-10)
