Lebanon – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati revealed on Thursday that the confrontations with Israel since October 8, 2023 have caused the displacement of regarding 100,000 Lebanese in the south and the death of 313.
Mikati said, during a session of the Council of Ministers: Our session is being held today in light of the continuing Israeli aggression. There are regarding 100,000 displaced people from southern Lebanon, 313 martyrs (including 66 civilians), and regarding a thousand wounded.
He continued: The biggest disaster is the damage to the agricultural sector, as there are 800 hectares (one hectare equals 10 thousand square metres) that were completely damaged.”
He added, “340 thousand heads of livestock were lost (killed in bombings on farms), and regarding 75 percent of farmers lost their final source of income.”
Mikati believed, “The government must declare the southern region agriculturally afflicted, especially since the problem will extend over the coming years.”
The same thing, according to Mikati, “applies to the educational sector, as there are regarding 75 schools that are permanently closed, not to mention the issue of rebuilding what was destroyed, and the priority of searching for sources of funding.”
He said that earlier Thursday, he held a meeting with United Nations organizations and ambassadors of donor and concerned countries regarding “what is happening in the south, and we asked for quick assistance.”
Mikati added, “The true peace we seek is the peace of human justice, and we raise our voice to the international community, denouncing the attacks and demanding that the enemy be deterred and the war stop.”
Hezbollah and Palestinian factions in Lebanon exchange intermittent daily bombardment with the Israeli army. It resulted in deaths and injuries on both sides of the dividing “Blue Line,” most of them in Lebanon.
This bombing, according to the party, expresses solidarity with Gaza, which has been subjected to an Israeli war since last October 7, which has left tens of thousands of civilian casualties, massive destruction and famine, according to Palestinian and UN statements.
Israel continues this war despite the issuance of a Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire, and also despite its first appearance before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
