Source: 6 Yemeni soldiers killed or wounded in double attack in Shabwa Governorate

The source added to Sputnik Agency that “members of Al-Qaeda launched a double attack on a site of the “Shabwa Defense Forces” affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council in the Al-Saeed Directorate, south of the city of Ataq, the center of the governorate.”

He explained that “elements of Al-Qaeda targeted the Al-Qalaa site of the First Brigade of the Shabwa Defense Forces in the Al-Masina’a area with mortar shells and rockets.”

He added, “The military site personnel issued a call for additional reinforcements to confront the attack, but the attacking elements set up an ambush with an explosive device for a military vehicle carrying a number of soldiers as it passed on the road leading to the site.”

According to the source, the double attack resulted in “the killing of 3 soldiers and the wounding of at least 3 others, while the attackers suffered losses in lives and equipment.”

The attack comes following a period of relative calm in Shabwa governorate from Al-Qaeda attacks, following the announcement by the Shabwa Defense Forces on September 25 that they had carried out a security operation in the Al-Masina’a area once morest strongholds of the organization. This came following two soldiers were killed and three others were injured in an attack on a checkpoint, preceded by an ambush with an explosive device on a military ambulance, which resulted in the deaths of four soldiers.

Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the world, has been witnessing a bloody conflict between the Yemeni government and the Yemeni Ansar Allah movement (Houthis) over power in the country since 2014.
