The discussion of the reform of the Judicial Branch is delayed

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— The president of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Juan Ramiro Robledo (Morena), assured that the reform to the Judicial Branch will not be submitted to discussion and voting on August 1, as scheduled, but will be held on the 15th of the same month.

Robledo explained that the 20 reforms were announced in the meeting, leaked yesterday morning, but explained that at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Commission, called for tomorrow, he will propose a draft agreement establishing that the draft reform of the Judicial Branch will begin to be worked on after the open forums conclude.

“They have all been announced, but the draft agreement does specify that the Judicial Branch will be discussed when the forums conclude. We propose that it not be discussed yet, nor that the document be circulated, so that it will be as of August 9; that is, when the forums end, when we begin to work on the adaptation of the draft opinion, to see if we have, no earlier than the 15th, a draft opinion that can begin to be discussed from the 15th onwards,” he explained.

The draft agreement states that “the draft Opinion of the initiative related to the Judiciary and its related matters will begin to be prepared starting on August 9, in order to consider the work of the National Dialogues that are being held during the course, and its presentation and regulatory circulation will not be before August 15.”

Juan Ramiro Robledo pointed out that the electoral reform will also be delayed, since it must be discussed in three different commissions.

“The electoral commission has been assigned to three commissions: us, the government commission and the political-electoral commission, so I cannot decide on that one. A meeting of the three commissions is required and about 100 people are going to vote on it, so I don’t see it as easy,” he said.

Project shifted

In point four of the draft agreement, which must be approved or rejected tomorrow, it is specified: “The draft opinion corresponding to the initiative of the President of the Republic on electoral matters is referred to the Committees on Political Electoral Reform and on Government and Population, for the purposes of the respective agreements that allow a joint meeting.”

The President of the Constitutional Affairs Committee indicated that with the call for an ordinary session on August 1, discussion will begin on the President’s initiatives and more than 170 initiatives by legislators that converge on the same issues.

Reforms Confidence that it will be “short term”

Juan Robledo believes that the reforms in social and rights matters will be approved.

Without much discussion

“Some of them will not be much of a debate and I trust that they can be released as soon as they are included in the constitution in terms of rights. I want to know who intends to vote against the Constitution stating that wages should never be below inflation. I think that these things can be easily released.”

Other more complicated ones

He acknowledged that the other issues, such as railways, republican austerity, preventive detention for tax evaders and the National Guard, among others, will be discussed in greater depth, but will be resolved little by little starting in August.
