Tokyo/Taipei – Against the backdrop of tensions over China’s growing ambitions for power, Japan’s navy has sent a warship through the Taiwan Strait for the first time, according to a media report. The Japanese news agency Kyodo reported this on Thursday, citing a source familiar with the matter. According to the report, the destroyer “Sazanami” crossed the narrow strait between China and Taiwan the previous day together with Australian and New Zealand ships.
