Deep sea: researchers discover new forms of life beneath the ocean

The East Pacific Ridge is the boundary that separates some tectonic plates and is known to be a very active oceanic rift, home to microbes and viruses that inhabit the subsurface seafloor. But a new study reveals that the environment may be home to some more life forms.

In a new study led by researchers at the University of Vienna, unexpected diversity and entire communities of tube worms, of still unknown spread, were found. in the sub-oceanic crustbelow hydrothermal vents.

To make the discovery, the researchers traveled by boat to the point that marks the Pacific Ridge and, there, submerged a Sub-Astian ROV to dive to the fumaroles located in the depths, approximately 2,515 meters deep.
