NAPLES.- The city of Naples in Italia is on alert after the death of another young man due to a gunshot.
Last Saturday, an 18-year-old young man lost his life after being hit by a bullet from a gun he was playing with in the streets of the Naples Historic Center.
A day later, the victim’s cousin was arrested after confessing that he accidentally fired the gun they were playing with.
This case joins other similar ones in the same Italian city in recent weeks.
There are three deaths from firearms in Naples
From last October 27 to Saturday, November 9, there were five gun attacks in which young people, some teenagers, were involved.
The cases range from accidental incidents to intentional attacks.
On October 27, a 20-year-old young man was shot in the back of the head while driving his vehicle; the victim survived.
A case that ended in tragedy occurred last November 2 in the San Sebastiano del Vesuvius neighborhood in Naples when a 17-year-old teenager murdered another, two years older than him.
The attacker was released from prison last May and shot the 19-year-old after a fight between two groups, allegedly because he dirty his shoes from an accidental stomp.
A week earlier, two teenagers, ages 14 and 17, shot and killed another 15-year-old boy in the city center.
Apology for crime comes to TikTok
These cases have raised alarms about violence in the streets, marginalization and the activity of criminal groups such as the Camorrawhich contribute to the ease with which adolescents are obtaining firearms.
Francesco Borrelli, deputy of Green-Left Alliance coalition who has been protected by escort since 2022, reported that more and more young people identify with crime, and even make altars or other tributes to criminals who have died.
The legislator recalled the case of Luigi Caiafaa 17-year-old minor from the historic center of Naples who died at the hands of the police while committing an attempted robbery in 2020.
After his death, a mural and an altar appeared in his honor.
“Beyond the mural, there was a small altar of devotion, as if it were the Virgin Mary, with the boy’s photo and his things, like a clock,” says Borrelli.
Although the police covered the mural with the young man’s face, there is a graffiti in his memory: “Luigi Cafaia lives”said the Italian.
The deputy regretted that these expressions of admiration for members of crime even reach social networks such as TikTok.
Los altars of the Camorra “Almost all of them were dejected years ago, but the apology moved to social networks, especially TikTok,” Borrelli explained.

What specific initiatives can community leaders and organizations implement to combat the glorification of violence online among youth in Naples?
## Interview: Gun Violence on the Rise in Naples
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Today we’re discussing the alarming rise in gun violence among young people in Naples, Italy. With me today is Dr. Isabella Rossi, a sociologist specializing in youth crime and violence. Dr. Rossi, thanks for joining us.
**Dr. Rossi:** It’s a pleasure to be here.
**Host:** The recent case of an 18-year-old who was fatally shot while playing with a gun is truly heartbreaking. This seems to be part of a concerning trend. Can you shed some light on the situation in Naples?
**Dr. Rossi:** Absolutely. Sadly, this latest incident is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past few weeks, Naples has witnessed a string of gun related incidents involving young people. These range from accidental shootings, like the case we discussed, to deliberate acts of violence resulting in fatalities.
**Host:** It’s even more disturbing to hear about teenagers involved in such tragedies. What factors might be contributing to this increase?
**Dr. Rossi:** There are likely multiple factors at play. Socioeconomic inequality, lack of opportunities, exposure to violence, and the proliferation of illegal firearms all play a role. The normalization of violence, often exacerbated by social media and online platforms, also contributes to a dangerous environment.
**Host:** You mentioned the role of social media. Can you elaborate on that?
**Dr. Rossi:** We’re seeing a disturbing trend of violence being glamorized and even glorified online. Certain platforms, even TikTok, have become breeding grounds for the spread of violent content, normalizing aggression and disrespect for human life.
**Host:** This is deeply concerning. What can be done to address this crisis?
**Dr. Rossi:** It requires a multi-pronged approach. We need robust law enforcement to tackle the illegal firearms trade. Simultaneously, we must invest in social programs that address the root causes of violence, like poverty and lack of opportunities.
Educating young people about conflict resolution, promoting positive role models, and tackling the glorification of violence online are also crucial steps.
**Host:** It’s clear that this is a complex issue demanding immediate attention. Dr. Rossi, thank you for sharing your expertise and insights.
**Dr. Rossi:** Thank you for having me.
