James Gunn Hints at Guardians Spin-Offs That Never Were and Weighs in on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Return
Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now in his rearview, James Gunn isn’t completely done with the world he left behind. Speaking to Josh Horowitz, the Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO confirmed that, while he’ll happily see someone else take the reins on any future Guardians of the Galaxy projects, he’d likely receivcredit as a producer. When asked for a legal confirmation, Gunn admitted he wasn’t made. “Um, I don’t know the exact legal answer to that,” he confessed. “I think the answer is actually yes but I’m not sure what the answer is. Listen, I’m excited for them to do whatever they want to with the Guardians. They all have my blessing.”
That last part is a clear reference to the franchise’s cast and Gunn confirmed that he has spoken to at least some of them about joining him in the DC Universe. However, casting Dave Bautista as Bane – a role he once campaigned for – doesn’t seem to be on the table.
Stepping Away from Bane
“I don’t know if Dave wants to be Bane anymore. He used to want to be Bane,” former wrestler turned actor donned a thinner physique recently. “I think Dave would much rather be another character than Bane right now. I think that’s probably the case. I, of course, love Dave and want to work with him again.”
It seems the ship has sailed on that role, unfortunately. Luckily, Bautista is a versatile actor capable of playing a variety of complex characters, though fans continue to suggest viewing doctor, Dr. Huge Strange.

Unseen Plans for the galaxy
Back to the Guardians, Gunn revealed some fresh insights into the world he built. He confirmed that at least three spin-offs were in development. For one, “The Ravagers show I thought could be a fun thing,” he admitted. “Legendary Star-Lord, frankly, we had a whole idea for that.”
“Rocket and Groot, to be honest, is what Guardians 3 was,” Gunn continued. “I wanted to do Rocket and Groot first, but I was talked into doing Guardians 3 instead. I knew I needed to tell Rocket’s story.”
Considering Marvel Studios hasn’t spoken about the Guardians of the Galaxy since Gunn departed, we can’t help but wonder if any of these spin-offs will ever happen.

been shelved as well.
Thoroughly embracing this universe, Gunn offered his approval of Downey’s return to the realm of superheroes.
“I thought it was a smart move, I was excited about it. I also love Robert,” Gunn said. ”
That’s cool. It’s a great idea, and there’s nobody better than him.”
Were any specific actors from the Guardians of the Galaxy cast considered for roles in the DC Universe?

**Host:** So, James, you’ve moved on to shaping the DC Universe, but you’re leaving a huge legacy behind in the MCU. With “Guardians of the Galaxy” soaring to new heights, are there any spin-offs or ideas you had for these beloved characters that never saw the light of day?
**James Gunn:** There were definitely some ideas swirling around, but ultimately, I feel like the Guardians’ story reached a satisfying conclusion. I’m excited to see what new stories other filmmakers tell with these characters. I’d be happy to be involved as a producer, but ultimately, I think it’s time for someone new to take the helm and bring their own vision to the Guardians.

I’ve definitely spoken to some of them about potential roles. I admire their talent and dedication, but at the end of the day, casting decisions are made on a script-by-script basis.
**Host:**
Intriguing!
And what about Dave Bautista?
He’s been vocal about wanting to play Bane.
