Hong Kong Welcomes Pokémon Go Players for Inaugural City Safari
The vibrant streets of Hong Kong are buzzing with excitement as trainers from around the globe descend for the city’s first-ever “Pokémon Go City Safari.” This two-day event, kicking off on Saturday, promises to immerse both locals and visitors in the city’s rich cultural tapestry and architectural wonders while enjoying the thrill of the beloved augmented reality game.
Exploring the City, Pokemon by Pokemon
For Pokémon trainer Lisa Broadwell, who hails from Sweden and has been playing since 2019, events like this are a dream come true. “I like the walk and catch aspect of Pokémon Go,” she said. “So this event seemed perfect to able to walk around, see things and just be walking and catching and seeing the sites as I go along. It fits my style of playing.”
Bringing together a global community of enthusiasts, the event has drawn players from far and wide, including Jim Haughey, who hopped on a plane from Las Vegas after a 15 and a half hour flight. “We’re still a bit jet-lagged,” he admitted, “We came from America. We came from Vegas. So we’re still trying to get our bearings of where we are or what we are doing.” Even with the jetlag, Haughey, a seasoned traveler for such events, is ready for the adventure.
Why Hong Kong? A City Where East Meets West
Elaine Hui, Director of APAC Regional Marketing at Niantic, the creators of Pokémon Go, highlighted why Hong Kong stood out as the perfect setting for this unique experience. “We need to find a city that is really easy to travel,” she explained. “And I think Hong Kong has that quality. On the other hand, we want to have something special for this city, and Hong Kong has that quality, too.
“They have East and West. They have very new, tall buildings, very iconic buildings,” Hui continued, “but they also have neighbourhoods, which are a little bit older, but with a lot of history. That’s why we think Hong Kong is a good place.”
