The launch of Starlink in Bhutan marks a significant milestone in the nation’s digital journey. By providing affordable, high-speed internet access to all Bhutanese, Starlink has the potential to bridge the digital divide, empower individuals, and drive economic growth. While challenges remain, the future of connectivity in Bhutan looks brighter than ever.

Starlink Launches in Bhutan: A New Era of Connectivity

Bhutan’s telecommunications landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation with the arrival of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet constellation. After months of anticipation, Starlink Services Private Limited officially launched its services on February 11, 2023, promising high-speed internet access to a nation previously dominated by Bhutan Telecom and TashiCell.

A Game Changer for Affordability and Accessibility?

Starlink’s entry offers a compelling alternative to Bhutan’s existing internet providers. While Bhutan Telecom’s Internet Leased Line (ILL) service provides 10 mbps bandwidth for Nu 5,500 per month, tashicell charges Nu 8,700 for the same speed. Starlink’s residential plan, priced at Nu 4,200 per month, offers download speeds ranging from 25 to 110 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 5 to 10 Mbps, with unlimited data.

“Starlink’s pricing structure offers flexibility. The priority plans, aimed at businesses and high-demand users, start at Nu 5,900 for 40 GB and go up to Nu 106,000 for six terabytes (TB), providing significantly higher data allowances than current offerings from local providers,” according to the Bhutan Internet Connectivity and Media Association (BICMA).

Furthermore, Starlink’s hardware, ranging from Nu 17,000 for the Mini Starlink Kit to Nu 231,000 for the Flat High-Performance Kit, offers scalability and customization options.

Experts suggest that while the initial investment in Starlink equipment might be a barrier for some, the long-term benefits of high-speed,low-latency internet could outweigh the costs. Notably, Starlink’s accessibility in remote areas, where traditional internet infrastructure is limited, presents a significant advantage.

“A major advantage of Starlink is its accessibility in remote areas where local internet service providers struggle with infrastructure limitations. This could be especially beneficial for businesses, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and government agencies requiring reliable and high-speed internet,” experts note.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Starlink’s flexible plans, catering to diverse needs, stand in contrast to the fixed-rate structure of ILL services. While ILL services primarily serve businesses and institutions requiring dedicated bandwidth, Starlink’s offerings appeal to a broader spectrum of users, from individuals to enterprises.

Currently, payment for Starlink services is primarily in USD. However, BICMA reports that a local payment gateway is under development, enabling bhutanese customers to purchase Starlink equipment and services using Ngultrums.

“Starlink services Pvt. Limited is working to make its services available with local currency payments, after which, interested users can purchase Starlink equipment with Ngultrums rather than USD,” according to BICMA.

Looking Ahead: A Future Fueled by Connectivity

Starlink’s arrival in Bhutan signifies a pivotal moment in the nation’s digital evolution. Its promise of affordable, accessible, and high-speed internet has the potential to bridge the digital divide, empower individuals, and fuel economic growth. While challenges remain, notably regarding infrastructure and affordability, Starlink’s entry marks a significant step towards a more connected Bhutan.
