Adil El Arbi: Hi,thank you for having me. “Patsers” was born out of a desire to shed light on the reality of our society. We’ve seen an increase in gang violence and wanted to explore the complex web of factors that contribute to it, while also Humanizing the individuals involved. Working with Bert Haverbeke and having a Belgian crime journalist on board really helped us placental authenticity.
Archyde News Editor: The film has certainly sparked conversations across Belgium. Prime Minister Bart De Wever himself attended the premiere. How does it feel to have such an impact on your home country?
adil El Arbi: it’s truly humbling. Belgium is a country with manny layers, and “Patsers” reflects one of them. To see the film resonate with people, even those at the highest levels of government, shows that we’ve touched a nerve. It’s a responsibility we take seriously.
Archyde News Editor: Speaking of responsibility,you’ve been praised for your commitment to reflecting the harsh realities of gangland life. The film is darker, as the reality has become more violent, as the crime journalist involved in the narrative mentioned.How did you balance storytelling with this responsibility?
Adil El Arbi: It was a delicate balance.We wanted to be honest, but we also didn’t want to glamorize violence. Our focus was onindividual motivations and the lasting consequences of choices. By doing so, we hope to trigger contemplation rather than imitation.
Archyde News Editor: You mentioned motivations earlier. Can you tell us more about Matteo Simoni’s character and his journey?
Adil El Arbi: Certain roles just fit actors like a glove, and Matteo was born to play “Patser.” His character embodies this complex mix of toughness, vulnerability, and ambition. We see him navigate the treacherous landscape of violence and loyalty,and it’s this journey that anchors the film.
