Lai Pei Jing Embarks on New Chapter in Badminton Career

Malaysian mixed doubles shuttler Lai Pei Jing is set to bring her partnership with Tan Kian Meng to a close at the prestigious All-England tournament in Birmingham from March 11 to 16.

Pei Jing,32,confirmed that the tournament will mark the end of their nine-year journey together, a period that saw both triumphs and challenges. They will be retiring from the sport as the world’s 17th ranked mixed doubles pair.

Moving forward, Pei Jing will embark on a new partnership with Jimmy Wong, a 22-year-old player who is relatively new to the professional circuit. Their debut as a pair will be at the Vietnam International challenge from March 25 to 30 in hanoi.

A Legacy Forged in Success

Reflecting on their time together, Pei Jing expressed gratitude for the experiences and achievements they shared:

“The Korean Open title (2022) that we won was our best outing together. Several semi-final finishes in the World Tour 1000 was also good results and gave us motivation to play on,” she said.

Their partnership produced notable results, including a run to the finals of the Australian Open in 2022 and the Singapore Open in 2019.They also were instrumental in securing mixed team gold medals at the Commonwealth games in Scotland (2014) and Birmingham (2022).

Despite the success, Pei Jing believes the time has come to move on:

“This time has come to end this partnership.
Our best in the All-England was quarter-finals,” she said.

A new Beginning

Pei Jing’s decision to partner with Jimmy Wong signals a desire to mentor and guide a young talent.Wong, who was previously dropped by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), has demonstrated resilience and dedication to the sport.

“I’m partnering a super young player. He is a very hardworking player and I feel like helping him and give him and I a chance to make it in badminton,” she said.

“I know,he does not have much tournament experience. He was kicked out from BAM when he was 21,” Pei Jing added.

“But he is very disciplined and I can see the fire in him. I’ve decided to give him a chance even though he is not a mixed doubles player.”

Exploring New Possibilities

Pei Jing’s future in badminton remains open. While her focus is on mixed doubles with Wong, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of partnering with Lim Chiew Sien in women’s doubles.

After their remarkable runner-up finish at the Australian Open last year, Pei Jing and Chiew sien have shown undeniable synergy as a pair.
