Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs, Vatican says

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Pope Francis Hospitalized with Pneumonia

Pope Francis, 88, has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital with a case of pneumonia in both lungs. While the pontiff remains in “good spirits,” the Vatican has described his condition as “complex,” noting that lab tests, chest X-rays, and his clinical picture continue to present a challenging scenario.

The respiratory infection, originally manifesting as bronchitis symptoms, has plagued the Pope for over a week. He had to delegate officials to deliver prepared speeches at events prior to his admission.

“despite this, the pontiff remained in ‘good spirits’ and spent the day ‘reading, resting and praying,'” the Vatican announced. Pope Francis also expressed his gratitude to well-wishers and asked them to “pray for him.”

Treatment and Outlook

doctors have altered the Pope’s drug regimen twice since his hospitalization to combat what was initially believed to be a “polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract.” the Vatican, however, now states that the Pope has developed pneumonia. the specific pneumonia strain has not been disclosed.

Pope Francis’s history with lung infections is not uncommon. He developed pleurisy as an adult and underwent a lung lobe removal at the age of 21,increasing his susceptibility to respiratory complications.

Impact on papal Events

The Pope’s admission has led to the cancellation of all public events on his calendar until Sunday, including those scheduled for the 2025 Catholic Holy Year.

Past Hospitalizations

This is not the first time Pope Francis has been hospitalized during his papacy. In March 2023, he spent three nights in the hospital for bronchitis. The frequency of these hospitalizations raises concerns about his health and ability to continue his demanding role as leader of the global Catholic Church.

As Pope Francis recovers, the Catholic world holds him in its prayers, hoping for his swift and complete healing.

Given Pope Francis’ age, medical history, and recent hospitalization, how concerned are medical professionals regarding his ability to continue fulfilling the demands of his papacy?
