Zhenya Kalkandzhieva: It’s truly surreal. it feels like just yesterday I was that wide-eyed girl, barely out of my teens, stepping into the fashion world. Now,here I am,at 50,looking back at a amazing journey in this ever-evolving industry.

Kalkandzhieva: Indeed, it’s going to be a grand event! initially, I had planned to invite big international fashion brands, but their lack of interest in the Bulgarian market led me to refocus. I realized this was an possibility to showcase our local talent, and I’m thrilled about it. The show will feature the most promising Bulgarian designers and brands, shining a spotlight on the amazing creativity coming out of Bulgaria.
The fashion industry has changed dramatically since you began your career. How have you seen it evolve, and what are some of the most significant changes?
Kalkandzhieva: The industry has definitely grown more global and digital. When I started, the Internet was in its infancy. Now, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are driving trends and democratizing fashion in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Diversity and inclusivity have also become much bigger conversations, which is a welcomed change. The industry is no longer just about size zero models or a specific standard of beauty.
You’ve always been an advocate for natural beauty. How do you think the industry can continue to promote authentic beauty?
Kalkandzhieva: It starts with portrayal. We need to see more models who truly represent the diverse spectrum of human beauty. It’s also about education—educating both consumers and industry professionals about the importance of natural beauty. It’s not just about trends; it’s about appreciating and celebrating our unique features and differences.
Looking ahead, what’s next for zhenya Kalkandzhieva?
kalkandzhieva: I plan to continue supporting and nurturing Bulgarian talent. I’m also hoping to expand my fashion agency internationally, introducing Bulgarian designs to a global audience.
