Former President Donald Trump has outlined a three-part plan for ending the war in Ukraine, according to German European Parliament Member sergei Lagodinsky. The plan involves a ceasefire, elections in Ukraine, and a final peace agreement. While the goal of ending the conflict is universally shared, Lagodinsky raises serious concerns about the potential ramifications of some of the proposed steps.
Calls for Ukrainian Elections Spark Criticism
A key component of Trump’s plan is the holding of elections in Ukraine. Lagodinsky, however, characterizes this as a “gift for Putin,” arguing that Russia seeks to oust President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has thwarted its ambitions to subjugate Ukraine. The Kremlin, Lagodinsky suggests, anticipates that following a prolonged and devastating war, a candidate more amenable to Russian demands will emerge.
“Russia wants to get rid of Volodimir Zelenska, who has disrupted its plans to subordinate Ukraine – the Kremlin hopes that after a difficult war, a candidate who is ready to concede to Russia will appear.”
This assessment, however, seems overly optimistic from the Ukrainian outlook. Public opinion remains overwhelmingly anti-Russian, with Ukrainians steadfastly rejecting any politician who even considers cooperation with Moscow after three years of war. The notion of a pro-Russian politician gaining power in the current climate appears to be a delusion held by the Kremlin.
Timing of elections Raises further Questions
Lagodinsky also cautions against conducting elections before a final peace agreement is signed. He contends that this could create fertile ground for political manipulation, with the perception that Ukraine’s path to peace is being deliberately delayed due to the election process. To ensure the legitimacy of the electoral process, he argues that elections should occur only after the final agreement is in place.
“In addition, the organization of elections before signing the final agreement could lead to needless political manipulation, as if Ukraine where artificially postponed due to the election, so the final contract should only be concluded after the elections to prevent any speculation about the legitimacy of the electoral process.”
security Guarantees Remain Crucial
Lagodinsky emphasizes that europe must recognize Trump’s plan as an attempt to compel Ukraine into capitulating to Russia’s demands. However, he also acknowledges that Ukraine will not accept terms that compromise its security and independence. While Ukraine desires an end to the war, it insists that any ceasefire must be accompanied by robust security guarantees and the restoration of its territorial integrity. Any discussion of a ceasefire, Lagodinsky underlines, needs to incorporate clear mechanisms to prevent future Russian aggression.
“Ukraine is interested in ending the war, but the main issue is when this will be done – a ceasefire without security guarantees and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity is unacceptable, so any conversation about ceasefire must include clear mechanisms to prevent repeated Russian aggression.”
The path to peace in Ukraine remains complex and fraught with challenges. While the desire for an end to the bloodshed is global, it is crucial to ensure that any negotiated settlement upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
– Considering Dr. VorotynskaS emphasis on the importance of free and fair elections, what specific measures could be implemented to ensure the integrity of elections in Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict?
In an exclusive interview with Archyde News, Dr.Oksana Vorotynska,Senior Fellow at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, shares her insights on former President Donald Trump’s proposed three-part peace plan for Ukraine.
Archyde: Dr. Vorotynska, thank you for joining us today. Let’s dive right in. Donald Trump has proposed a ceasefire, elections in Ukraine, and a final peace agreement to end the war. What’s your take on this plan?
dr. Vorotynska: Thank you for having me.Well, on the surface, any plan aiming to stop the bloodshed is welcome. However, we must approach this with caution. The devil,as they say,is in the details.
Archyde: Trump’s plan emphasizes elections in Ukraine. Though, europol member Sergei Lagodinsky raised concerns, saying it truly seems like a ‘gift for Putin.’ What’s your stance on this?
Dr. Vorotynska: While it’s true that holding elections amidst war poses challenges, letting Russia dictate the timing is not an option. After all, Ukraine’s democracy is not something to be bargainized. ukrainians have consistently shown their resolve at the ballots despite the ongoing conflict. we must ensure the elections are free, fair, and held under international supervision.
Moreover, the notion that a ‘pro-Russian’ candidate would emerge is a misplaced fear. Public sentiment against Russia remains strong. The recent presidential and parliamentary elections are testament to that.
Archyde: Lagodinsky also advised against holding elections before the final peace agreement. What’s your view on this?
Dr. Vorotynska: timing is indeed crucial. Holding elections too early could led to needless political jostling and distrust. Though, delaying elections indefinitely isn’t feasible either. We must find a balance – perhaps simultaneous with the final peace agreement referendum, ensuring all sides have a voice.
Archyde: lagodinsky stresses that Ukraine must insist on security guarantees. How vital are these for Ukraine and the wider region?
Dr. Vorotynska: Vital beyond measure. Ukraine has repeatedly shown it’s ready for peace but not at any cost. Security guarantees, restoration of territorial integrity, and mechanisms to prevent future aggression should be non-negotiable. This isn’t just about Ukraine; it’s about sending a clear message to any aggressor that such acts won’t go unchecked.
Archyde: If you could send a message to Donald Trump and the Russian government, what would you say?
Dr. Vorotynska: I’d say,”Peace is not just about words on paper. It’s about respect for sovereignty, democratic values, and human dignity.Let’s ensure any peace plan reflects these principles, benefiting not just Ukraine but the whole region.”
Dr. Oksana Vorotynska’s insightful perspectives offer a glimpse into the complex nature of the Ukrainian conflict and the challenges ahead in negotiating a lasting peace.
