Boet’s story, highlighted in “The Children’s Hospital,” is one of resilience and adaptation.Diagnosed with skeletal dysplasia, a bone disease that progressively curved his neck, Boet underwent surgery last year to address breathing difficulties. Unluckily, a rare complication arose: paraplegia.
While the surgery initially brought relief, the news of paraplegia cast a shadow over the family. “He has worked super hard physically, a lot of training, but also overcome many fears,” shares his mother.
Boet’s life has since focused on rehabilitation and learning to navigate his new reality. “they are actually small steps that he makes a day,” his mother explains. “He sometimes wonders himself what he actually goes ahead, but if you look at it in the longer term, I will see a big difference.”
His progress is tangible. What initially required assistance from three people for a simple transfer now only necessitates the help of his mother. “And then I hardly have to do anything and you just push yourself up.”
Despite the permanent nature of his paraplegia, Boet remains persistent. “Unfortunately, nothing has changed about the paraplegia. Of course you hear that, of course, that it recovered, but neurologically everything has remained the same,” his mother acknowledges.
However, Boet’s spirit remains unyielding. He takes pride in his newfound abilities in his wheelchair, performing “stunts” to showcase his progress.
“When there is a visit, he always wants to show what he can do with his wheelchair. It is really nice to see how proud he is. So he is better with the wheelchair than many others, so that is why he has something to do again to be proud of, something he can do,” his mother says.
Boet’s story is a testament to the human capacity to adapt and overcome adversity. It is a reminder that even in the face of significant challenges, hope, resilience, and the pursuit of personal growth can prevail.
