“Anne Marie Hochhalter was a pillar of strength for so many people […] She was a source of inspiration adn the exemplification of never giving up,” said Columbine High School Director Frank de Angelis.

Hochhalter, a 17-year-old clarinet player, was dining in the school cafeteria when she was shot in the back and chest, leaving her paralyzed. This devastating event marked the begining of a long and arduous journey for Hochhalter.

The Columbine High School shooting remains the deadliest attack on a school in U.S.history,claiming the lives of 12 students and a teacher, along with the two perpetrators. Over 20 others were injured.

Tragedy struck again six months later when Hochhalter’s mother, Carla Hochhalter, tragically took her own life.

Hochhalter dedicated her life to overcoming the trauma and living life to the fullest. She continued to face medical challenges stemming from her injuries, yet she remained resolute. According to Townsend, Hochhalter never stopped fighting to reclaim her life.

On the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, Hochhalter took to Facebook, remembering the 13 victims. “Thay would like us to remember and laugh at their clowneries […] Rather of focusing on how their life has unfortunately ended. These 13 are always with us. they are never forgotten. We are Columbine,” she wrote.
