Fernando Alonso: A Driver of Two Faces?

Fernando Alonso, the two-time formula 1 World Champion, has been a dominant force in the sport for over two decades. His raw talent and relentless drive are undeniable. Though, his legacy is also intertwined with controversy, notably regarding his actions in the 2008 season while racing for Renault.

massa’s Persistent Accusations

Former teammate Felipe Massa, who retired from F1 in 2017,has maintained his stance that Alonso played a role in manipulating the 2008 championship outcome. The incident in question involved a deliberate crash by Nelson Piquet Jr., Alonso’s teammate at the time, which led to the deployment of the safety car in a race-defining moment.

“My views about him in 2008 will not change. Fernando has done something bad,” Massa declared in a recent interview with Rebello magazine. “He didn’t want to say anything about it, and that’s a shame as his greatness as a driver didn’t match his actions back then.He said he didn’t know anything, but he hid everything.”

A Complex Relationship

Despite his accusations, Massa acknowledged that he had a generally positive relationship with Alonso during their time together at Ferrari. However, he also observed that Alonso presented two distinct personas: one for public consumption and another reserved for private interactions.

“He always had two faces and two personalities,” Massa stated. “He had a face that he would show up on the outside and a face that he would show up in private. He always only thought of himself.”

Alonso’s Outlook

Alonso, now racing for Aston Martin, has consistently denied any involvement in the 2008 incident. He expressed frustration with the continued scrutiny, stating: “I asked Lawrence (Strol) the same thing over and over, and he always says we wouldn’t have control over him.”

looking Ahead

Moving forward, Alonso is focused on his current team and the upcoming 2026 regulations. he recently welcomed the arrival of Adrian Newey, the renowned Red Bull Racing aerodynamicist, to Aston Martin’s ranks.

“Adrian will be a free spirit. I can’t tell him what to do,” Alonso remarked. “It’s fine if he’s going to help the 2025 team the day he comes to his team. If he wants to focus solely on the 2026 team, that’s fine because at the time he has clear ideas and even a day. Because I don’t want to waste it.”

The 2008 controversy continues to cast a shadow over Alonso’s career, but his undeniable talent and ambition remain central to the story of Formula 1.
