Phil Collins Reflects on His Legendary Career and Retirement
An Exclusive Interview with Archyde
Archyde: Phil, thank you for joining us today. We’re thrilled to have you share your thoughts and experiences with our readers.
Phil collins: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Retirement from Music
Archyde: You’ve recently announced your retirement from music. Can you tell us more about this decision and how you feel about it?
Phil: Well, I think it’s been a long time coming, really. I’ve been in the business for over 50 years, and I’ve loved every minute of it. But I’ve reached a point where I’m just not as hungry for it as I used to be. I keep thinking I should pick up the microphone, head back into the studio, but the enthusiasm just isn’t there like it onc was. I’m at peace with it.
Health Challenges and The Last of the Lionheart Tour
Archyde: We admire your honesty. You’ve been through a lot physically over the years. How did health issues influence your decision to retire?
Phil: Health has played a significant role, yes. I’ve had some serious issues, from the hearing loss to the dislocated vertebra and the back surgery. The 2022 tour with Genesis was supposed to be my final hurrah, but I had to perform seated due to my health. I just don’t want to push it anymore. I want to enjoy my life, spend time with my family, and except the fact that my musical days are behind me.
Your Remarkable Career and Impact on Music
Archyde: Your career spans five decades, filled with Grammys, Billboard awards, and even an Oscar. What do you consider your proudest achievments?
Phil: Gosh, there are so many. Working with Genesis, taking on the lead vocals, and that amazing journey we went on together. My solo work, too – “In the Air Tonight,” “against all Odds,” all those songs that people still sing along to. But I think what I’m most proud of is the love and support from fans over the years. That’s truly a gift I’ll always cherish.
from Drummer to Frontman
Archyde: you joined Genesis as a drummer but evolved into their frontman. How did that transition feel, and what did it teach you about yourself as an artist?
Phil: It was nerve-wracking at first, stepping into Peter Gabriel’s shoes. But I think it made me grow as an artist. I had to find my own voice and sound, not just as a singer, but as a songwriter too. It taught me resilience and adaptability, which have stayed with me throughout my career.
Your Daughter’s Success and Family Life
Archyde: Your daughter, Lily, has made quite a name for herself as an actress. How does it feel to see her achieving such success, and how involved are you in her career?
Phil: It’s an incredible feeling, seeing her do what she loves. I’m so proud of her and the work she’s doing. I’m not involved in her career per se – she’s her own person, making her own way. But we talk about it, of course, and I’m always there for support if she needs it. It’s crucial to let her spread her wings and find her own path.
The Future of Phil collins
Archyde: While you’re retiring from new music, we hope to see more of you in other areas. Can you give us any hints about what’s next?
Phil: [Laughs] Well, I’ve always been interested in art, so maybe I’ll explore that more. I might also get back into producing or writing. I’m actually quite looking forward to having the time to dabble in different things. I might even write a memoir. Who knows? but whatever it is, I’ll take it one step at a time and enjoy the journey.
Thank you, Phil, for taking the time to chat with us today. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Phil: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure.
