Apple TV+ Not Created to Boost iPhone Sales; Focus on Original Content
During a recent interview with Variety, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, shed light on one of the most controversial topics surrounding the company: the mission of Apple TV+. According to Cook, Apple’s streaming platform was not designed to drive iPhone sales.
Apple’s Cultural Visioneston the Forefront
Contrary to the promotional strategies commonly adopted by competitors, Apple TV+ stumbled onto the scene with a singular cultural vision—offering original, scenario-specific content from the get-go. Unlike competitors who opted for quick market entry through catalog purchases, Apple chose the slower but more principled route of investing in content that truly embodies the Apple spirit.
“I know that building a catalog would have been the fastest way to enter the market, but it did not seem like a choice in line with the Apple spirit. We prefer to invest in content that reflects our identity and in which we can pour all our passion,” Cook said.
“F1: The Movie”: A Testament to Apple’s Ambitious Films
The timing of the interview is significant. Apple is presently in the midst of promotion for “F1: The Movie”—its most ambitious film production to date, starring Brad Pitt and co-produced by Lewis Hamilton. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for hit films like “Top Gun: Maverick,” this $200 million movie is set to premiere first in theaters via Warner Bros and later on Apple TV+.
Despite leveraging advanced camera technology from the latest iPhones to capture high-speed racing sequences, Cook dismisses the notion that this film is a promotional tool for iPhone sales: “I don’t even think for a second that this film should serve to sell more iPhones. This is not the purpose. We simply want to tell a great story, create value, and make good business. That’s all.”
The Future of Apple TV+
By 2025, Apple aims to significantly enhance its TV+ offerings. Cook envisions a robust weekly programming lineup that will consolidate the service’s credibility globally. This ambitious programming calendar will ensure Apple remains a leader in the streaming landscape.
Apple’s approach to content creation is a bold strategy that redefines the goals and purpose of streaming services. While competitors focus on short-term sales and audience acquisition, Apple prioritizes originality and storytelling—setting a new standard in the industry.
