Exagon at the 19th European Congress of Psychology: a path of personal growth and social inclusion

Breaking News: Exagonboard Game Revolutionizes, Set to Make Waves at European Congress

In a significant breakthrough, the Exagonboard game, created by the architect Salvatore CatalfamOr and backed by the vision of President Sergio Lo Found of the CSR, has transformed into a vital tool for rehabilitation and psycho-educational intervention. This innovative game was initially conceptualized as a fun activity with dynamic, inclusive rules but has now evolved into an effective means to stimulate interaction and enhance collaboration among people with and without disabilities.

The CSR, the leading Sicilian entity in rehabilitation with 19 accredited centers, has been instrumental in turning Exagonboard into a robust rehabilitation tool. Dr. Graziella Zitelli will present this groundbreaking project at the 19th European Congress of Psychology in Pafos, Cyprus, from July 1-4, 2025, during the event “New knowledge through memorable experiences.” This event aims to share the project’s universal applicability and to engage the international scientific community.

Game Structure and Rules

Exagonboard is designed as a competitive yet cooperative game involving Special athletes and partners. The partners provide non-invasive support, ensuring a collaborative environment focused on equal opportunities. Tournaments are strategically categorized by functional levels based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) codes.

The game’s objectives encompass cognitive-motor skills such as leadership, attention management, and consolidation of psycho-motor skills. It also targets psychosocial growth by increasing self-esteem, fostering collaboration, and enhancing personal motivation.

Methodology and Evaluation

The Exagonboard project uses the Tower of London Test (TOL) to measure reactivity and response times. A sample study of 19 participants indicated a clear improvement in response times and social openness. The game adapts to individual skills, starting with simple exercises and progressively increasing the difficulty to match participants’ real potential.

Broadcasting to Schools

Thanks to its multifaceted value, Exagonboard is increasingly being embraced as an educational tool in schools. It promotes the integration between pupils with and without disabilities, enhances cognitive and social skills, and fosters teamwork and self-awareness. The game’s implementation aligns perfectly with school programs focusing on inclusion and diversity.

From Game to Transformation

The success of the Exagonboard project underscores how the game can act as a potent instrument for personal and social transformation. Beyond a mere playful activity, it serves as a developmental pathway that breaks barriers and fosters integration, making it stand out in the rehabilitation and educational spheres.
