Tropical Storm Wipha is intensifying and is projected to reach typhoon strength before making landfall on China’s southern coast on Sunday, July 20.

Taiwan experienced Wipha’s power on Saturday. The island’s Central News Agency reported the storm had maximum sustained winds of 101 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 126 kilometers per hour, as it passed south of the island.

Heavy rainfall was recorded across Taiwan’s east coast. Hualien and Taitung counties received more than 20 centimeters of rain. This led to the cancellation of multiple domestic flights and the suspension of 14 ferry routes due to hazardous sea conditions and strong winds.

Across the Taiwan Strait, Fujian province on China’s east coast also saw disruptions, with many ferry services suspended as a precautionary measure.
