Recent innovations further enhance quality. A novel technique utilizes tidal movements to automatically flip nets, exposing the seaweed to air and preventing the growth of epiphytes – organisms that can degrade product quality.

Red Seaweed Holds Promise for Bioproducts

Looking beyond traditional varieties, IBMC identifies tropical red seaweeds – Kappaphycus Alvarezii (cottonii), Kappaphycus striatum (Saloc), Eucheuma denticulatum (spinosum), and Gracilaria – as having greater potential as a mainstream commodity. Their higher carbohydrate content makes them ideal for conversion into bioproducts, and their year-round growing season allows for multiple harvest cycles.

However,IBMC cautions that scaling seaweed production to rival established industries like oil remains a notable hurdle. correa points out that even with current global production levels (35-40 million tonnes), seaweed coudl only yield approximately 4 million barrels of oil annually, compared to Exxon’s daily output of 4.5 million barrels.
